Second Annual New Year's Eve Celebration with Celeste

I have the honor of being invited once again to broadcast a special program on the Starliner's Radio Network. This will be the Second Annual New Year's Eve Celebration. Broadcasting from my studio in the United States, I'll be showcasing songs from my latest album, "The Road to Santiago".

In addition to the title track, the show will feature a few ballads like "Searching", "The Trees are Bare" and "White Butterfly"; orchestral pieces from my film work, such as "The Labyrinth" and "La Rose Rouge", as well as a hopeful upbeat tune I wrote for the coming year and beyond, called "Oranges".

The Road to Santiago de Compostela

Countless individuals have made the pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. A five-hundred mile trek across Spain over the Pyrenees Mountains and rugged terrain. The trail is fickle, from smooth sand or grass to rocks and ridges. Many believe it to be a spiritual transformation and powerful challenge of faith.

Having not yet taken the journey myself, I close my eyes and imagine. I can feel the angels all around me. The meseta beckons, as the mountains slowly rise behind. The endless vineyards along the way are an elixir for the soul. As I near my celestial destination, I descend through a forest in the snow. Peering through a veil of sweet persuasion, the moon lights my way, the way of Saint James.

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and composer Celeste Friedman delivers an eclectic journey of originals in tribute to the countless pilgrims who have crossed the five-hundred mile trek to the Cathedral de Compostela. For over one thousand years, it has been believed to be the final resting place of the apostle Saint James.

Friedman closes her eyes and imagines, sensing the angels everywhere. The Holy Spirit is her guide along the winding, rocky path, where she reveals in the title track that she carries all of her dreams and sins, a heavy load.

Haunting, mesmerizing and hypnotic best describes Friedman's compositions, lifting a veil on struggles with faith. In search of strength and guidance, Friedman features singles such as, "Searching"; "Forgiveness"; "White Butterfly" and "The Meaning of Life". Challenged by a crippling disease since her mid-thirties, Celeste tells the story of tolerance of pain and tests of patience and acceptance in "Running with Scissors". The journey to Santiago de Compostela was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages in medieval times. Today, common starting points are Paris, France or the town of Le Puy. Some claim to experience a holy transformation of the soul and believe to discover a new understanding of life, death and one's relationship with God.

If you don't mind living with a slob, don't read this! If you're fed up with her having male friends in addition to her female friends, don't read this!

If you are ready to take the plunge and fly solo, check out my book, "Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single". There are those who believe that if you are not in a relationship and prefer living alone, you just exit and don't really live. It may be true that there are some who are really living life and those who are just existing, but the latter is not true for the majority of singletons.

Single men and women have been labeled many negatives, but until you embrace the possibilities, you'll never know. You may want to try living single for a period of time before you enter another relationship and you're bound to discover who you truly are.

It's shameful that our society allows their ignorance to dictate their beliefs. This is not 1811 or 1911, but 2011 and still, people will knock you down for managing your life on your own without a spouse or partner. Those who make a conscious, wise decision to fly solo have their reasons and shouldn't be criticized for their status. Sir Paul and His New Bride

When I was eleven years old, I was convinced that I would one day marry Paul McCartney of The Beatles. I had read the fan magazine stories about his love affair with Jane Asher, but didn't care, because I was certain that I was the one and he was my prince charming.

I was a typical American girl who hung posters of the fab-four on the back of my bedroom door and gazed at Paul every day. My star-struck attraction never led me to make any plans of how I would actually meet Paul or if I would ever travel to London for a chance meeting. I just simply loved him, his innocent eyes and his songwriting.

The day that my future husband moved into my house, hauling in all of his "man-stuff" was a huge life-changing experience for me. I discovered that his framed life-size poster of the cover of the "Introducing the Beatles" album was not as significant to me as in the past. Hanging the poster on my living room wall was against my decorating tastes, but I compromised and agreed it would hang in the downstairs rec room. I no longer felt a flickering flame when I looked at Paul, who had now invaded my country-french interior decorating styles with the look of college dorm.

The day eventually arrived when Paul married Linda Eastman and I knew my chances were nill, reflecting on my childhood with a smile. Heather Mills came along in recent years and now his new bride, much younger than Sir Paul, exited the town hall yesterday in London after sealing their vows.

So, that is that. Will she still need him and feed him when he is seventy-four or ninety-four? Best wishes and good luck to my dear James Paul.

In Loving Memory

On December 6, 2011, I traveled to lower Manhattan. My mission was to share gifts, books and music with the students of area elementary schools directly impacted by the World Trade Center tragedy.

I invited my dear friend and singer-songwriter Eric Gnezda to join me and with his late cousin Tony and my pal Hugh, our two vehicles headed for New York like two sleighs in the blinding snowfall. We were carrying gifts made by local schools here, books to donate for school libraries and special greetings created by Stevenson Elementary of Heath and artwork, along with a flag of peace designed by Trevitt Elementary of Columbus, Ohio.

We arrived in 12 hours, met by the principal of Mary Help of Christians School to load in the night before our concert. Every step, ledge and table were still lightly covered with dust that hadn't ceased to sift down from the air since 9/11.

The next morning, we presented two concerts for the students, sharing songs about heroes and singing Christmas carols together. As we all stood holding hands in a giant circle at the end of the last show, we sang "Silent Night". It was very difficult to say good-bye. Packing up our gear and loading out to our vans, a truck had just arrived filled with Christmas trees that the school was selling to raise money. The powerful scent of the pines overwhelmed the dank, sooty air like a blessed veil.

Our next stop was Ladder 13, dropping off breads and fruit baskets for the firefighters. They asked us to sign their guest book and I will never forget the look in their eyes. It was December and people were still coming to bring gifts and offer assistance.

Now, ten years later, I wonder where those students and firefighters are and how they're doing. We will never forget them and hope they are all well.

Our prayers are also with the families of those lost in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

One more year has passed, 2,606 bells will ring at Ground Zero tomorrow, September 11, 2011.

The Home of the Brave

Our troops are returning home to stand in line with other American civilians looking for a job and soon, the number will increase when more come home from Afghanistan. So many of these troops who have laid their lives on the line are returning home to find only work at minimum wage.

Sadly, many have held positions in the military that cannot be found at home. One example is a combat medic with years of experience, who is not qualified in some states to simply drive an ambulance or EMT truck, which is simply shameful. According to some older veterans, today's military should be required to take advantage of the new GI bill, in order to convert their military training and experience to civilian life back home.

Every Thursday, the jobless estimates are released. Although our government releases those figures to the media with hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, thousands more of the unemployed will be added to the growing list when our troops come home.

The benefits of being single at this time weigh in significantly. Compared to men and women who are married with children, the new single veterans have more freedom and less responsibility, allowing them to take advantage of more opportunities in the work force. For the financially fortunate, they can attend or return to college, earn their degree and plan their future strategically.

If more business owners could open their doors to hire even one of our vets coming home, maybe it would be a start in the healing process. America has lost jobs and trillions of dollars because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now those who went there to support and defend the cause will be discharged, jobless and some will be homeless. Unfortunately, our U.S. Congress will look the other way and be only concerned with their own welfare and political agenda. Whenever the country needs them most, they go on vacation.

Who has the answers, who has the courage in the home of the brave to make a difference?

The Drive to Survive

"Don't let life run away from you", said my friend John Holt today on his radio program, "Networking Singles" on Business Radio 550, WBZS. John's message this morning was inspiring. He was referring to opening yourself up to new opportunities in the dating world, but this made me pause and think of it in a broader sense.

In this time of gloom and doom, we cannot allow our lives to disappear. We're so focused on potential demise, quick to tear our lives apart, throw in the towel or destroy our life's work. Our life's work that has taken a lifetime to build. Will we allow politicians to govern our lives? Where do we draw the line?

We American citizens are bracing ourselves in our own unique ways to survive a financial catastrophe in our country. The middle class does not exist anymore here. You have the rich and the poor; the red states and the blue states; the democrats and republicans. The word, "compromise" will be come extinct in the American vocabulary if we allow it. Are you sick of the rhetoric, brainwashing and scare tactics? Don't you just want to smack the talking heads on TV if they say that word, "posturing" one more time?

Over the past two weeks, I have been trying to dig down deep to the find that place inside of me that is resourceful, creative and strong. You have it too, right there at the core of your being. It's an inner wisdom that will guide us and keep the fire in your belly burning.

Match.com just released their top 10 picks of the best cities in the U.S. for summer getaways if you're single. Come on, it's always the same places, NYC, Vegas, Chicago, Boston, Denver, San Francisco. I'll agree with their pick of Seattle, but Washington, D.C.? Who wants to breathe the same hot air with Congress?

The Single 101 Nation's Number One pick for 2011 is a true getaway. It could be a place where you find a special someone when you least expect or a tranquil escape for healing and self-discovery.

Some boast that it's the new Mecca, attracting the Sedona, AZ and Marin County crowds. However, aside for the metaphysical and new conscienceness chatter, Asheville, North Carolina is surrounded by nature, elevations into the clouds and fresh air. Serenity awaits you in every direction. You can escape the sizzle of the summer of 2011 in the Blue Ridge Mountains and drink from a pure mountain spring. Carmageddon? Really?

Best wishes to those who try to journey the 405 this weekend in sunny California. Check out the beginning of my book, "Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single" and Reason # 101, Spontaneity.

Several years ago, when I thought I might as well take a nap, stuck in traffic on the Ventura Highway, I thought it would be interesting to get out of my car and visit other drivers sharing the jam. You never know who you might meet. Aspiring actors may stumble over a casting director or movie producer. Maybe the 405 is a great place to find work. Could it actually help economic woes in the city of angels?

There are alternate routes set up, but the popular recommendations are to avoid the area and just stay home. However, the San Jose Mercury News reports that "Carmageddon" may be blown way out of proportion. http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_18474513

As the article states on MercuryNews.com, it could be just another Y2K attempt by alarmists who enjoy spreading stress. That's what L.A. needs- more stress!

What Does Freedom Mean to You?

Several weeks ago, I asked our Single 101 Nation followers to share their answers to this question, "What does freedom mean to you?" and promised to post them on this weekend's blog. This morning, on July 3rd, I am still waiting for comments. It's okay if you choose not to share. That's what freedom is all about. Below, I have listed comments that I have found around the world over the past two years, published in newspapers or online forums. These are my picks for this Fourth of July of 2011:

*When I left Ireland to go to North America, I was finally free.

*To be yourself.

*I can speak about anything I wish to speak about and have no fear of retribution with anything but words.

*I could have been an entirely different person were it not for coming to the United States. Often I ponder what my life would have been like without the freedoms that I have now. My family and I emigrated from Chile with small means and one simple goal, opportunity.

*Becoming a U.S. citizen was the best decision of my life. Freedom, to me, is the right to have the opportunities to progress and do it without being oppressed.

*To me, freedom means that you can live your own life. You make your own decisions and choices and no one can control your life for you. No one makes your decisions for you. But it also means that you have to live with the consequences of the choices that you make, whether they be good or bad.

*I served my country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Navy. I think freedom means being honest. If we do that, we can be free.

*To me, freedom creates a future for me and my family to believe what we want to believe, to seek after the things we desire, to work hard for our own success, and to learn and grow without limitations.

*Freedom is not free. You are either paying for freedom with support, sacrifice and service or you are free because someone else has paid the price for you.

*Freedom is the opportunity to own your own destiny.

*Freedom is a place in your heart.

Father's Day and Chick Magnets

If it works with your budget, why not buy Dad a new Fiat for Father's Day. It's cute, saves on gas and has plenty of room in the back for his golf clubs.

You may find it hard to believe, but Fiat has not been available in the U.S. market for 27 years. Very soon, you'll see the new 500c on the road. It's sexy Italian curves will make you take a second look, but I don't agree with some who say it's a chick magnet. It's fuel efficiency is very attractive, but chicks still look twice at sports cars.

For you guys who like Reason #48- You Can be A Total Chick Magnet, check out the new Chevy Camaro, the BMW 128i and the Nissan 350Z

Although Ferrari's and Porches are at the top of the list, the Jeep Wrangler will still turn heads and only costs around $18k.

Better yet, for Dad, don't give him something with a ribbon around it, give him something he'll always treasure- time with you. Take him to a movie in an actual theatre, have a picnic in the park or at the beach.

Turn It Up!

Thank you for visiting my YouTube vignettes! William is back to playing polo and Kate will now wait for the pregnancy test to show the positive sign.

But, now that the royal honeymoon is over, let's get back to the real world. Real is not really a good word. So, I'll simply call it the world as we know it.

If your world is allowing you the freedom to come and go as you please or have the bed and bath all to yourself, celebrate and soar like an eagle. Relish in the fact that you are the master of the remote and the thermostat. You can leave the windows open to the fresh summer night breezes or pile on the covers with the AC on overnight.

Now that you have made the choice to stay single or enjoy being single indefinitely while focusing on your priorities, what are you doing today to get to the next level? Whether it's a personal goal, furthering your education, taking that vacation you've always dreamed of or pursuing an offer of a lifetime, how are you turning up your energy level?

Each month, I enjoy being on the air with John Holt, radio host of Networking Singles. John maintains a blog on his website for his business, The Tri-State Dating Service. As we're approaching the summer season, John's blogs are all about focus, energy, turning up the heat and remaining positive, even when the chicken little media is in our faces, as John puts it.

Whether the economy tanks or not, it's still up to us as individuals to stay persistent. You can follow along with the rest of the sheep and wait quietly for hope to part the job market sea or you can choose to find new opportunities on your own. If we don't want the government to own every fragment of our lives, then, we shouldn't rely on the government to find us a job. Where did that concept come from anyway?

Granted, there are a few hundreds of thousands who are lazy, but the majority of Americans fight for independence and to maintain a life that our forefathers came to this land for. As my late father would say, step up to the plate and take responsibility. As a single person, it's even easier when you don't have to ask for permission from a spouse or partner in a relationship. Make wise decisions in your own best interest.

Do we really have time to waste over wondering what will happen to the Weiner's in Congress or former senators who may be indicted due to infidelity? Instead of camping on the sofa to find out if the bachelorette is finally going to see who is behind the phantom mask, couldn't we be making a list of goals or journaling? I'd rather be writing a new song or outlining my next book. There is no better time than right now amid the noise and chaos of this world to churn up the fire in our bellies. A dream is not going to come true on its own. Let's turn it up!

The paparazzi are hoping to catch the money shot from the balcony, as all eyes will be waiting for the prince and princess to share a kiss.

The Union Jack Royal bunting is up and flags are flying, heralding the wedding of the century, tomorrow, April 29, 2011. Behind the scenes, the Archbishop of Canterbury is going over his notes for the service, the London Chamber Orchestra and Westminster choir is rehearsing and there's not one hotel room left within 200 kilometers of London. The Royal newlyweds plan to reside in Wales at the start, but honeymoon destination and plans are top secret.

However, there's one more destination that might actually have some legs -- sea legs that is. There's a rumor circulating that the royal couple will honeymoon on Desroches or the North Island in the Seychelles, 930 miles off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Both islands offer secluded, pristine beaches and luxury villas fit for royalty.

In an elegant vision reminiscent of Grace Kelly, Catherine Elizabeth Middleton made her entrance at Westminster Abbey on the arm of her father, Michael Middleton today. Pledging their love before the world, the Duke an Duchess of Cambridge said, "I will". It was a moment that felt as though all of us viewing or present stepped into a joyful, positive future. Prince William has invited seven of his ex-girlfriends to the royal wedding-SEVEN- Only one of Kate's former beaus has received an official invitation. Word on the street is that Kate's ex, Rupert Finch is in a serious relationship and it is certain that the royal couple has his blessing. One ex-girlfriend of William's, Carly Massey-Birch has not been invited, which leaves the window open for that "speak now or forever hold your peace" moment. It would be interesting to learn what instructions have been given to the royal guards and Scotland Yard, in the event of a ceremonial disruption. This all begs the question, how many people do you know who have invited practically an entire stable of exes to their wedding?

A shout out to author and money guru Suze Orman. You may love her, hate her, or you're tired of hearing her rantings about how to save money and respect your money, but if you desire financial security, you'd better listen up.

In her latest book, "The Money Class", Suze features examples such as how we treat our money and how important money REALLY is to us. Take out your wallet right now for a closer look at how organized or messy it is. Suze says you only need the most important cards in your wallet, like an American Express card and one additional credit card. Your gas card, insurance card, ID info and driver's license are all you need, in addition to the minimal amount of cash you need for that day or week. There is absolutely no reason to carry all of the cash you have in the world in your wallet at all times. This is just protection in case you're mugged or lose your bag in the subway!

In "Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single", Reason #82, "You Can Build Your Own Wealth", I travel back to the 1700's, where Benjamin Franklin was hoping to capture the attention of America's early colonial society, urging them to save their money. Suze Orman could be labeled as the Ben Franklin of this era. She knows what she's talking about!

I give her so much credit for stepping up to the plate to help people. Countless others who have wealth and knowledge of how to gain financial security just sit back and laugh at those who don't have a clue about saving money. Just think of how your local back could offer more customer service with classes or workshops on managing your money. Maybe they'd gain more customers. The truth is, they love stupid people. They'd lose earnings if everyone really knew what they were doing.

Poll Finds Single Motherhood in America Still Unacceptable

Okay, I'm mad now. It's 2011, for God's sake, and a recent poll conducted by the Pew Center finds that single motherhood continues to get the thumbs down by most Americans.

According to an article in the Washington Post by Carol Morello, posted on February 16, 2011, most Americans still view single mothers as detrimental to our society. The word, "detrimental" is pretty extreme, isn't it?

One in five households in the United States are now managed by single parents. Of the 2,700 surveyed, opinions were uncovered on seven trends in modern relationships that are dramatically changing the format of the traditional family. These trends covered unmarried parents raising children; gay couples raising children; single mothers; unmarried partners living together; working mothers; interracial marriage; and women who have never had children. There was nothing mentioned in the study on a survey of single fathers raising children.

Those who participated in the survey who were positive about the changes in our society, were mostly women and Hispanic, living in the Eastern U.S. People who were unhappy and against these changes were older, white Republicans, who were married and claiming to be religiously observant, residing in the Midwest or Southern U.S.

"There is still a strong belief that children need two parents", said Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins University sociologist, who studies families. Cherlin states that these convictions are based not only on moral concerns, but practical and economical reasons. A recent report on the network evening news, shows that women continue to forge ahead in the workplace, with more receiving college degrees, but still are only earning 75% of what men earn in similar positions.

Land of The Moon River

I'm heading back to my beloved Low Country of the South next week and looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues. The week is filled with book signings, radio interviews and amazing opportunities to meet some of the best authors of our time.

The actual Moon River that flowed very near to his boyhood home inspired great success of many.

In writing Single 101, I discovered right from the start that I was really writing the book for myself. Making a decision that could impact the rest of my life, I needed the courage and strength to survive on my own. Even being my own coach and support system took courage, convincing myself that I had to keep believing in me. Whether we’re consciously aware of it or not, courage gets us through each day and night.

I know so many women who fear being alone and not exclusively after darkness falls. Many are accustomed to a house full of family members and when one finds herself solely responsible for keeping the home fires burning, it can be a daunting task. “You’ll need courage for what?” ask both women and men. The list can be overwhelming, so I’ll just mention a few:

Keeping your job and for as long as possible if you choose the single lifestyle permanently

Getting through the holidays if you have no family or close friends

Cooking for one and enjoying each meal in solitude

Accepting what life’s cards are dealt for you in sickness and in health

Being able to ask for help when you need it

Many of us singletons can be very stubborn mules with strong, independent spirits. Not only does it take courage for some of us to ask for help, it’s important to have the motivation to reach out and help others. With so many people saving every penny and focused on their own immediate families, the spirit may not be knocking on your door this year. If you feel like Christmasing, there couldn't be a better time than now to start a new tradition. Reaching out as a volunteer, donating to a local charity or attending holiday events at places of worship can breathe new life into your world of flying solo.

Pure Genius by Design
Celeste Friedman is a highly lauded singer/songwriter/composer whose work has been featured on Live! With Regis And Kelly; The Ghost Hunter; A Prairie Home Companion; National Public Radio; Music Choice and ESPN. A 2005 GRAMMY nominee, Friedman can lay claim to a #1 album, a GrIndie Award, Indie Track Of The Year Award, and a nomination for Artist of the Year in the Netherlands. Friedman is also a prolific author, with her most recent book, Single 101: 101 Reasons To Celebrate Being Single raising the curtain on her own life and the joys of going it alone. Concurrently, Friedman has written a collection of songs, also entitled Single 101, which serve as a musical companion to the book. Friedman digs deep into the emotions of joy and loss, using humor and insight to parse emotions and get to the simple truths that lay underneath.

Single 101 opens with "The Dribble On My Pillow", an amusing little ode to night drool done in a cute, classic pop style complete with hand claps. There's a certain cheese factor, but it's all tongue in cheek and entertaining. "Gotta Get It Right, Gotta Get It Straight" is all about trying to get your bearings, even taking time out from a relationship to find your true north. This is the proverbial foot out the door whose status as a relationship cliché doesn't mitigate its occasional truth. Friedman celebrates reclaiming her bed as her own in the wake of a relationship with "Mattress, Sweet Mattress”, a bit of hokey fun that will hit home with most anyone newly single.

“I Can Change My Mind” underlines the classic line about a woman’s prerogative with a funky bass line and some of the best piano work you’ll hear in one of the best all-around tracks on the album. “My Bra And His Underwear” is a humorous take on the comingling of a couple’s undies in light of their fading shared libido. It’s a cute and funny bit of commentary in song that has the advantage of being informed by truth.

“Batteries Not Included” is an ode to the sort of products that make living on your own more bearable. In this funny little tune, Friedman explores the purchase of one such item from the internet, right down to getting dressed up for the delivery and the knowing grin from the UPS man. Everything comes together for Friedman on this number, from the vaguely nervous, almost Christine-Lavin style sense of humor to the musical arrangement. Friedman tackles such subjects as emotional eating (“I’m Pudding On Weight”) and the unintended side effects of garments from Victoria’s Secret (“Suddenly We’re All French”) before settling into a surprisingly serious love ballad entitled “This Time”. Here Friedman shows a bit of 1980’s pop/R&B pastiche in a tune that sounds like it should have charted twenty-five years ago.

“Three Little Words” is a bluesy number about a partner who just can’t say the right things, and leads into the woeful melancholy of “Taken Away”. It’s hard to discern exactly what Friedman’s intent is with this tune, but the musical approach is a bit off the beaten path and intriguing. Friedman slips her funny shoes back on with “Barbie’s Got The Blues”, projecting relationship troubles onto America’s favorite anatomically unlikely plaything. “Flying Solo” is a song of independence that throws off the shackles of expectation. Stylistically jazzy and fun, Friedman channels her inner Nellie McKay for one of the best turns on the album. Friedman closes with “Every Day Is Independence Day”, a song that touts the opportunities and possibilities made available by being single, delivered in a semi-big band style arrangement. It’s a nice closer that supports Friedman’s sense of celebration of singlehood.

Celeste Friedman mixes funny and serious moments on Single 101. As a stand-alone album Single 101 has enough light and dark to give a full reflection to the ups and downs of relationships and also of choosing to be on your own. As a soundtrack for Friedman’s book of the same name it is a sublime companion. The musical ups and downs on Single 101 are quite comparable to those found in life. If by design this is pure genius. If by accident then it is the sort of socio-musical accident that is the by-product of artistry. Either way, Single 101 is an entertaining farce that pauses to uncover some of the more serious truths that lay beneath its comical face.

For the Love of Marriage

Do you agree that marriage is obsolete or have you fallen in love with marriage all over again at the announcement of the royal engagement? The results of a survey released in October of 2010 revealed that 39-40% of Americans believe that marriage is becoming obsolete.

We’re Saying that Marriage is Obsolete, but Still in Love with Marriage

Chatting by the water coolers, we’ve been sharing our reasons for choosing the single lifestyle vs. marriage, but find ourselves still mesmerized by the news reports of royal wedding plans. We wonder if Westminster Abbey will be the location to exchange the royal vows as we are blinded by the flashes from photographers, capturing the raven beauty Kate on the arm of Princess Diana’s first born. It is now being said that the college educated and financially secure may be the only classes that will plan for marriage in the future. Ironically, Wills and the woman who will be the future queen of England will be such role models in the spring of 2011, exploiting their treasure and global position on their wedding day.

On November 18, 2010 Julie Snider of USA Today reported that those aged 18 to 29, mostly single, made up 44% of the study compared to the 32% aged 65 and older. Studies such as this have arisen in the past after examining the decreasing numbers, when almost 95% of Americans were married in the 1950’s down to 54% in 2010. It’s also interesting to note that statistics have shown younger women who married in the fifties were more likely to divorce. The general consensus of the recent marriage study revealed that even though what makes a marriage may be changing rapidly, it is still family that is most important to all.

Half of the Population of London is Single

In the United Kingdom, half of the population of London proper is made up of singletons aged 20 to 59, with the widest difference between London and elsewhere in the UK among 45 to 60 year olds. British historians state that 350 years have passed since a blue blood married a commoner. The whimsy will captivate and you can bet that throngs of Brits will be lining up along the parade route to get a glimpse of the royal bride and her groom, cheering them on and waving their flags of the monarchy.

Believe Half of what You See and Nothing of what You Hear

It should be noted that only 2,691 Americans took the survey on the obsolescence of marriage, given by the Pew Research Center which is located in Washington, D.C. Their researchers, who usually conduct monthly studies on politics and evolving ideas are part of a nonpartisan, walking, talking encyclopedia of facts on the latest issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and our world. Just keep in mind that it’s only an opinion of talking heads and not literally 40% of 310,750,000 Americans. Will the naysayers lead us to believe their findings are true and will we follow suit?

However, studies like these are certainly not a waste of time and worth pondering as our world is constantly evolving. More single men and women are taking advantage of new opportunities to garner wealth and develop a career before getting married, hoping they choose wisely in all areas of their lives. It may become fashionable to stay single in Europe, where more of the focus is on wealth and status, but there’s a royal wedding to plan. You’d better buy your hat.

Dedicated to my father Leo Reichert, a Korean War Veteran, the inspiration for this song came from the discovery of a story in London's Daily Mail. When I read about the death of Sjt. Paul McAleese and saw the photo of his widow and baby son Charley, it broke my heart. I composed "The Son of A Soldier" for Charley and every son and daughter of our fallen heroes. Sjt. McAleese, serving with the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, was killed trying to save a fellow comrade while on foot patrol in the Sanjin District of Afghanistan in 2009.

Creepy Blogoweenie~ What Would You Do?

Has this ever happened to you and if it did, what would you do?
Colleen orders from catalogs now and then and is accustomed to finding one or more shipments in her mailbox. In the area where she lives, even a typical brown cardboard box is wrapped in a plastic bag, so most of her packages look similar in general appearance.

She went to her mailbox the other day to find two packages. Like most of us, Colleen never double checks to see if what has been delivered has the correct address. She automatically assumed both packages were for her and proceeded to open them. However, inside the second package was a dildo named “Bubbles”.

Flabbergasted, Colleen checked the mailing address label and discovered that it was addressed to a neighbor down the street. By accident, the neighbor’s dirty little secret ended up in Colleen’s mailbox instead.

What would you do in this situation? Colleen and her husband debated whether to hand deliver it to the neighbor and admit their mistake of opening it or trying to re-seal it and leave it on the recipient's porch under the dark veil of night.

The incident has stirred up interesting discussion. Who is this neighbor they thought they knew pretty well and now feel they don’t know at all? Was the neighbor buying the sex toy for themselves or was it a gag gift for a friend? The invoice was also inside, revealing how much they paid for the product. So many questions and a mystery that will only be left to the imagination.

Read Aloud at The Ohio State University

On Thursday, October 14th, I had the honor of being invited to read excerpts from my new book, “Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single” at the Thompson Library on the main campus of The Ohio State University.

What an extraordinary experience it was to share the same space where great authors have presented their works. Sitting in a comfy leather chair by the grand fireplace, I looked out into quite a diverse, global audience, as if the whole world was there listening to my stories. Panning across the room into everyone’s eyes, I could feel a joining of souls who appeared to be searching and hoping for the secret to happiness.

An oriental student named Yin asked if there was anything in the book about children and I sighted two vignettes where I write about women who were married, preparing to divorce their husbands, but waiting for the right time to exit in order to protect their children. Yin stated that his greatest concern about marriage is that children could possibly be the cause of a failed marriage or relationship.

Most of the students in the audience were perfect examples of current statistics that show more single people are developing their careers, building wealth and social status before committing to marriage. Closing the program with Reason #24, You Don’t Have to Be Afraid to Go It Alone, I sensed a peaceful feeling, noticing many audience members smiling with validation and courage in their eyes. As they exited the reading room, walking off into their future lives, I couldn’t help but wonder where life would take them and I wish them all great success.

What a wonderful afternoon of meeting new friends, stimulating conversation and smiles. Thanks to all of you for your interest and support of “Single 101”!

The Single 101 Nation Hits the Road

It's time to pack the bags again and hit the road, as we prepare for the next twelve weeks of book signing events and one-woman shows. The next two months will be very special, as I hope to see old friends and classmates in my hometown and childhood stomping grounds of central Ohio.

We'll kick things off on Wednesday, August 18th at the Barnes and Noble Book Store, located on the Newark campus of The Ohio State University. I'll be joining two emerging authors, B.M. Green and J. Michael Demko for a fun book signing event from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The campus will be buzzing that day, as Orientation Day will also be underway on campus. Wear your scarlet and gray and join us!

Saturday, August 21st will be a great time in historic Mount Vernon, Ohio at The Paragraphs Book Store, just around the corner from the Farmer's Market. I'll be there from 10:00am to 1:00pm, signing books and hoping to see many friends from Knox County and meet new friends who are curious about the Single 101 Nation.

Statistics show the majority of working age people who live in London are not married. Daniel Dorling, Professor of Human Geography at Sheffield University says, “There isn't another city, town or village like it". There is a higher proportion of single people living in London than anywhere else in the UK. Almost half the London population between 20 and 59 years are single and in many cases, three to four people share a flat where there used to be two.

The City of London is second only to Brighton in the percentage of same-sex couples according the most recent London Census returns. Nine percent of the population of London cohabitate with no children, where single parent households have become the fourth most common type of household in the UK and the most numerous in London.

Earlier this spring, AskMen.com rated London #5 on their list of the best cities in the world to live for single men. Single 101 Hits the Radio Airwaves from Coast to Coast

Hey Everybody,

I’m on the air Monday and Tuesday from coast to coast, sharing excerpts from the book and my take on Ali Fedotowsky, The Bachelorette.

Rumors have been hovering for a while that Ali will not choose anyone at all and stay single. That is my prediction as well. There are several reasons in my book, “Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single” that are relevant to the current bachelorette, but let’s just consider five of them:

# 63- You’re Not Desperate to Find A Mate- what is she doing on these reality shows? Does someone as lovely as Ali need to take this route to find a husband?

#57- You Don’t Have to Be in A Relationship to Feel Complete- we don’t live in a couple’s world. Those who believe that we do are delirious.

#7- No More Broken Hearts- Ali has had her heart broken enough throughout both the Bachelor and Bachelorette experiences.

#74- No Drama- especially after Justin and Frank. By the way, Justin may become the first contestant to be sued by ABC producers for breaking his confidentiality agreement.

#24- You Don’t Have to Be Afraid to Go it Alone- Ali appears to have it all together and definitely has the courage to survive on her own.

Wild Crazy Reasons Why Ali should stay single for a while longer:

#80- You Can Lick the Spoon

#14- Farting is Less Embarrassing

#12- No Toilet Lid Issues

#17- You Are the Keeper of the Remote

#28- You Know Where the Soap has Been

Throughout the season, Ali would mention or admit that she wasn’t sure if she was ready for marriage, primarily due to her doubts about the potential bachelors in the competition. Intuitively, Ali sensed that Frank would disappoint her.

Roberto Martinez- many women are threatened by a gorgeous, to die for type of guy like Roberto, fearful of infidelity and abandonment issues.

Chris Lambton- may be the one that Ali truly felt secure with, but is that enough to convince herself that she’s in love with him and ready to be his wife?

The show has been on long enough for all to realize that not everyone is in it for love, just self-promotion. Even Ty who came close to the finals has a music career in Nashville. No one has pointed out yet where he was really coming from.

With all of that said, there is a new twist, as the new promos for the show that began airing last Thursday, unveil a potential problem with both bachelors, who appear to be apprehensive and not ready for engagement, let alone marriage.

Keeping Your Body Healthy and Your Mind Sharp

Getting my daily fill of the New York Daily News this morning, I came across the following article published by Reuters:

“Researchers find link between weight gain and loss of mental skills”.

It’s focus was primarily on older women who they claim should maintain a low weight to keep their reasoning, memory and over-all mental skills high. According to Dr. Diana Kerwin of Northwestern University in Chicago, she and her research team found that obesity in and of itself is “an independent risk factor for cognitive performance”. Kerwin also stated, "Even if you do have normal blood pressure and you're not diabetic, it still should be something that's looked at as an independent risk factor for your brain health."

This reminded me of the “Nun Study”, where researchers gathered long-term data on over 600 nuns living in Minnesota. They found that 21 percent of the participants had lesions and plaques in their brains, which are key markings of memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease. However, they lived their lives with no outward signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia. They also discovered that these nuns had happier and more positive outlooks on life, were better linguistics and had better dietary and exercise habits.

Now I'd like to see the same research conducted on obese men and aging priests. In the meantime, lay low on those potato chips and sharpen your mind by eating healthy, staying active and empower yourself, focusing on your well-being.

The Bachelorette Needs to Join the Single 101 nation!

Uh oh, Jake and Vienna are not an item anymore and all of you Bachelorette followers are probably wondering what that means for Ali’s guys. Frank, Chris L., and Roberto seem to be the ones who will be the final contenders. Justin gets deep-sixed this week after Ali discovers he already has a girlfriend and they could all go home if Ali is still in love with Jake.

For those of you who have not been fans of ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the current bachelorette looking for the man of her dreams was a former finalist in the last Bachelor episode, where Jake ditched Ali and chose Vienna.

Since Ali has coyly mentioned that she would rather remain solo until she finds her Mr. Right, I think she should read my book, “Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single”, even if it validates that she needs to patiently wait a while longer, instead of finding a husband and companion for life on a television dating reality show.

Reason #8: No More Maid Service

Every time I have found myself between relationships or when I was just divorced and on my own, the greatest feeling of relief has always been the fact that there is no more cleaning up after a man or roommate. I’m a fussy housekeeper and I would just like for the floor to stay clean for at least 30 minutes after I’ve scrubbed and waxed. Thirty minutes isn’t much to ask for, but if you’re living with a messy, inconsiderate person, they win, you lose.

I should have done a better job at paying attention to the signals early on in most of these relationships. My second husband’s apartment was abominable. Every item of clothing he had worn for two weeks was all over his bedroom floor. He didn’t care and said they got picked up when it was time to go to the Laundromat. Each morning, he would have a bowl of cereal and when he was finished, he would sit the bowl down anywhere in the apartment. There were plastic cereal bowls with spoons stuck in them everywhere.

You ask, “and you married this guy?” Well, yeah. Just another one of those relationships where you love someone so much, you convince yourself that they will change. Never in a million years!

News from Stockholm says that it was supposed to be the Summer of Love in Sweden this year.
Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, is engaged and plans to wed in June. The crown princess had already taken her fair share of criticism for her relationship with a commoner, Daniel Westling, her fiance. But now he looks like a prince compared to Victoria’s little sister's beau.

Princess Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine, just called off her royal wedding due to rumors that her fiance, Jonas Bergstrom, a lawyer, had sex with a college student while he was engaged to the princess.

CNN reports that the couple have gone their separate ways.

Guilt-Free Gorging

As I write, the snow is continuing to fall on top of the 10 inches on the ground. The local meteorologists have already named this the Blizzard of 2010 and it isn’t through with us yet.

Our local post office has made the decision to break their “whether rain, snow, sleet or hail, the mail will get through” promise and postpone mail delivery until the first of next week. My road is impassable and the drifts are growing rapidly. A neighbor has just knocked at my door to see if I wanted my driveway ploughed, but he can’t do it for free. The price of regular gas yesterday was $3.29 per gallon, but my car can safely wait in the garage for a couple more days with the hope that the cost of filling the tank will decrease.

The cupboard and refrigerator are stocked, my Saturday gig has been canceled and why in the world do I even want to go out anyway? The blanket of snow, or I should say layers of comforters of snow in my yard, actually give me a warm feeling as I watch the flakes get larger, blowing aimlessly in the wind that swirls around my house.

This calls for cuddling up on the sofa with a bag of the latest chocolate/peanut butter chip cookies I discovered at the market. Once again, the benefits of being single come to the surface. It’s cold, I’m snowed in and the cookies are all mine!

Planning For the Future

I know, we can’t get the year started without making those good ‘ole New Year’s resolutions. How long do we keep them anyway? For many, the single life is all about discipline and commitment to oneself, so it’s the perfect time to take inventory, reinvent ourselves and get on with life.

What can we do different this time? Does it always have to be a new diet or exercise resolution? Why not make a list of dreams, wishes or financial goals? If you’re working hard at building wealth, what can you add to the plan to give it more muscle? For example: I resolve to stop wasting money on frivolous items that I don’t need and invest it in the future.

Maybe 2008 is the year to focus more on friends and family. Maybe it’s all about balance in our lives. What if the whole world would focus on balance, love and peace~ together? Okay, so I’m getting off of this computer, stop working and starting on that one ~balance~ right now!

Never having been blessed with children of my own, I can’t begin to understand what it feels like during the holidays to be a single parent. Meeting the demands of the regular routine and schedule must be tough enough, let alone the additional stress of shopping, decorating and planning the festivities for Christmas Day.

Attitude, compassion and hope make up a great recipe to survive the holidays as not only a single parent, but a single person. The greatest blessings we have are the people in our lives, our family and friends. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday and I hope this season brings much joy and many reasons to celebrate being single along with those who are special in your life.

Free Drinks in Pubs and Clubs

One of the 101 most popular reasons to celebrate being single includes the advantages of being unattached when you’re partying in pubs and nightclubs. Whether it’s Happy Hour, Ladie’s Night or a free drink for singing karaoke, there are more places you can imagine where the booze is flowing freely.

It’s also amazing to learn how many women have this thing down to a science. Even if they don’t admit to mooching off of their friends and favorite bartender, they’re organized right down to the hors-doeuvres at wine tastings. Just how easy is it? Here’s Miranda’s story:

My girlfriends and I have a weekly calendar, or “party-time schedule”, as we prefer to call it. Monday nights are specifically for ridding our woes of the typical manic Monday at the office. Jordan’s Harbour Pub gets the evening started with free goodies on the buffet and complimentary flute of wine. For just us girls, it has to be pink on Mondays, so the zinfandel is perfect.

Skipping to Wednesdays, our favorite karaoke spot is Mandy’s, where the free cocktails keep flowing for the one who is the most popular singer. If the audience keeps voting for that singer, one can have all the imported beer or wine of their choice!

On Thursday nights we head out to Moe’s Sports Bar, where it’s Ladie’s Night. Ladies get in free and the first drink is on the house. Everyone is always checking out ring fingers, even though that really doesn’t matter anymore. Every other Thursday, they offer free salsa lessons, where the main room cuts loose and gets wild.

Friday’s is a must at Club 19. They have a great deejay and the girls get two free drinks before 10pm, plus no cover charge for ladies. If we’re partying into the weekend, Shannanigan’s downtown offers a “Girl Classic Card”, where ladies can drink free Long Island Tea’s from 9:30pm and on into the night on Saturday nights and also get 20% off anything on the menu. There are some who contest the whole principle behind Ladie’s Night. If women can receive a free drink, many men believe they should have the same benefit. One man actually filed a lawsuit against several night spots promoting Ladie’s Night. An attorney in Manhattan, he states that an establishment that offers Ladie’s Night enticements, violates the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under the law. His class action suit accuses several NYC clubs, such as the Copacabana, Sol and the China Club of “invidious discrimination” against men in their policies for admitting patrons.

This is one man’s fight over clubs who, in his words, “discriminate against men”.
It will be interesting to see if he wins his case and no, if you’re wondering, we don’t know if he’s just ugly and can’t get a date.

Suddenly, We're All French!

Maybe the stockings can be hung by the chimney with care, but sometimes the unmentionables are unwanted articles hanging to dry in the bath. In many a quaint village in Europe, where one tenant building stands inches from the next, they still hang all of the laundry, including the lingerie on the clothesline tied between the downspouts.

I’ll never understand why men love to see us wearing push up bras, garter belts and seamed stockings, but hate where we choose to wash and dry them. If you’re single, living alone and not lost in the jungle of his unmentionables, they can dry on the back of the kitchen chair or tossed over the shower curtain without a care.

Some are too shy to admit it, but we all love shopping at Victoria’s Secret, even if we’re just curious about what other shoppers have inside that pink striped bag. To get you in the spirit of the hustle-bustle, I’d love to share my song about the joys of what a few inches of lace can bring. Here’s something to put under your tree or stuff in a stocking for someone you love and you won’t find this one on iTunes!

Written in 1995 and debuted at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, this is a fun and lighthearted cabaret-styled romp through the secrets tucked inside that little pink-striped bag. You Can Build Your Own Wealth

We’re all searching for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, whether it provides capital to launch a dream or allows us the freedom to have what we want, while keeping all of the bills paid.

The Internet is filled with empty opportunities, promising get rich quick schemes with little or no work. Book stores have grown from shelf sections on the topic to complete departments filled with ‘get rich’ how to's to Trump University. The real principles that build wealth haven’t changed for centuries. According to Benjamin Franklin, your journey can begin with reading his book, “The Way to Wealth”, where you may find all the wisdom you need to amass a fortune. Granted, it’s still going to take hard work, focus, and discipline, but do you have the passion?

Franklin’s book is a quick read, just 30 pages and filled with financial wisdom. "The Way to Wealth" is an essay first published in 1758 as a preface to Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac". Just 78 maxims, written by our beloved kite-flying, electricity-discovering, founding father himself. Here are just a few: "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise" . . . "Never leave that till tomorrow, which you can do today" . . . "God helps those who help themselves" . . . “He that lives upon hope will die fasting” . . . “There are no gains without pains”.

On the importance of saving, Franklin’s Father Abraham said, "If you would be wealthy, think of saving, as well as of getting. Away, then, with your expensive follies, and you will not have then so much reason to complain of hard times." These words still resonate true today. On the constant need to buy clothes and goods: "What use is this pride of appearance, for which so much is suffered? It cannot promote health, nor ease pain. It makes no increase of merit in person, it creates envy, it hastens misfortune." Father Abraham then asks the crowd, "what madness it must be to run in debt for these superfluities?"

I wonder, shouldn't the "The Way to Wealth" be required reading at the high school level? It's great to have Franklin’s image on the U.S. one-hundred dollar bill, but his timeless advice is priceless.

Have Male Friends without Having to Defend Yourself

When you’re free to make friends with whoever you want, especially the opposite sex, life is but a dream. If you find yourself in a stifling relationship or marriage, the bowl of cherries can turn sour. Here are three women’s stories:

Cherie lives on the Atlantic coast of Florida, where the beach is only two blocks from her home. She stops by the beach on her way home from work whenever she can, just to walk along the shoreline and listen to the ocean. Cherie and her boyfriend Chad met at the same beach and he knew how much time she spent there. One afternoon, he confronted her about how late she was getting home. She told him that she ran into a friend and didn’t mean to be late.

Her boyfriend began to feel uncomfortable and allowed his imagination to run wild, thinking that Cherie had met someone else. Late one day, he stopped by the beach and saw Cherie sitting on a bench having a conversation with a man he didn’t recognize. Chad approached them and asked Cherie if she was ready to go home. She paused to introduce her boyfriend to the man on the bench, when Chad insisted they leave immediately.

“What is your problem, Chad?”, she asked, as they walked toward the car. “So, is this where you go to meet men?” he yelled back. Shocked, Cherie reminded Chad that she had female friends and male friends and if he had a problem with that, he better think twice about living with her.

Alena works at a health club, where both co-workers and members are male.
There was a time when she was struggling with not only a jealous husband, but a co-worker who had been flirting with her. As she found herself constantly re-assuring her husband that she wasn’t interested in anyone at work, she was also being confronted by her jealous boss, every time he thought she was being too flirtatious with a male member of the club.

“It was a nightmare”, said Alena, “a very difficult time in my life”. I love my husband, but he has never accepted how I have to dress at the club and who we interact with there. As an assistant manager, Alena also has to keep a watchful eye over the other female club consultants and defend them in situations when male club members claim that they don’t receive the attention they believe they are paying for. Alena says that it’s challenging at where you draw the line between service and pampering.

Liz spends every possible waking moment in her yard and garden. Bill, her next door neighbor, is another one of those homeowners who has the latest gardening equipment and would mow twice a week if he could. Liz and Bill usually just wave to each other, but occasionally stop to visit at the fence to share gardening tips.

Married to Jack for fifteen years, Liz is content with Jack’s disinterest in the garden. “When the grass is getting high”, says Liz, “he seals himself off in his office over the garage to write.” But Liz doesn’t mind and finds her zen in mowing and trimming among the roses and herbs, so Jack never has to be concerned with exterior maintenance.

Bill lost his wife two years ago and found that escaping in the care-taking of the yard seemed to be healing. Liz can tell that he is lonely, but finds herself being careful about how much she talks to Bill. “Even though Jack doesn’t seem to care”, she says, “he would never understand”.

Plenty of Space in the Closet

You can renovate, re-organize or give away the clothes you don’t wear anymore and still not have enough room in your closet, but according to many single women, it’s a beautiful thing to have the space all to yourself.

Madeline writes that she’s fed up with his stinking running shoes on the floor beneath her best gowns and party dresses. Angie says that she can’t open the bedroom closet door without being hit in the head by her boyfriend’s basketball. “I can’t believe that I let it get to this”, writes Karen. “His toys and sporting equipment are more important than neatly hung and folded clothes”.

Closet organizing, maximizing space, designer walk-in closets, even stackable baskets can cost more than you think. I don’t have to list all the tips and tricks of creating more storage here in this blog, since you can easily access sites on the web for ideas on how to re-vamp your space and clear out what you don’t need.

More Time For Yourself

If you’re a workaholic like me, it always seems as though you never have time for yourself. I’ve checked out the time management how-to books and tried to write down “me time” on the schedule, but pampering myself rarely happens.

It’s an absolute truth that the body, mind and soul need to be fed with peaceful, comforting nourishment. They say that even a half an hour each day helps so much and it can definitely be worked into anyone’s busy schedule.

Living a single lifestyle affords more opportunities and there should be no excuses to skip them. Just think of what you could be doing. I grew up in the florist business and although the shop is gone, it’s still a wonderful feeling to buy myself a bouquet of flowers that not only feed my soul, but brighten my home. The fragrance brings back special memories of my childhood.

The cell phone, answering machine and email have become an addiction in this fast paced world, yet still, everything can wait. You can return calls and messages after your fifteen minutes of meditation. “Take a long walk”, you say? Yes! Imagine yourself out there right now with the leaves falling and the scent of autumn in the air! After work, take the long way home. Seek a new route and change of scene.

If you’re single, who’s stopping you from soaking in the bathtub? Light the candles or take that book with you. Is the beach near where you live? Aah, lucky you! Need I say more?

If you love to dance, make a mix of your favorite songs, turn it up and let yourself go. Make music a part of your life and your nourishment. The powerful, healing properties of frequencies and tones can soothe the soul or rev up those good endorphins.

There are many who will say that they clean, volunteer or do other work to escape, but it’s not about creating ‘more work’ for yourself. ‘More time for you’ doesn’t have to be the other extreme either, like mountain climbing or skydiving. The key is serenity and calming down your world. You deserve it.

No More Searching Through His Briefcase

Angela had been married and divorced twice. Although she left both marriages, disappointed that she wasn’t successful at working on a relationship, she still trusted both of her ex-husbands.

She dated for a while, finally meeting John, who she really believed she loved and trusted. Suddenly, he began to act differently, fussing with his appearance and wardrobe while getting ready for work each day. When he would frequently call to tell her that he was working late and wouldn’t be home for dinner, she began to suspect that John had met someone else.

John was a retail store manager and had a high turnover of employees. Angela also knew that he kept a daily journal. She questioned whether or not her suspicions were valid and began to search through the pockets of his pants and suit jackets at night while he was sleeping, finding small scraps of paper with telephone numbers and email addresses.

One night after John had fallen asleep, Angela slipped downstairs to discover that John’s briefcase was now shut tight by a combination lock. She couldn’t believe that she was pursuing a plan to prove that John was cheating on her, as she was also afraid to leave, starting out on her own all over again.

However, Angela was determined to get into his briefcase and tried different combinations to open the lock. When she tried John’s ex-wife’s birth date, the briefcase popped open. Inside she found more than enough evidence that proved that John was cheating and plenty of proof that John did not love her.

Tucked inside of a secret pocket of the briefcase was John’s journal. As she turned the pages, Angela was literally sick to her stomach, shaking and feeling frightened by what she read. She didn’t know this person at all, this man whom she had been sleeping next to for the past year.

Finally, John flew to his company’s corporate headquarters for a weekend conference. Feeling as though her heart would implode, Angela packed her things, arranged for a mover to load her belongings and headed back to her home town. She refused herself the opportunity to confront John in person and simply left a message on his cell phone, informing that she would be gone when he returned.

John never questioned why she left and she has never heard from him again.

Backseat Drivers Are Optional

You Can Tell the Person Criticizing Your Driving to, "GET OUT OF THE CAR!"

Wikipedia defines a back seat driver as a passenger in a vehicle who is not in control of the vehicle and does not appear to be comfortable with the skills of the current driver. Passengers labeled as backseat drivers appear to feel insecure and do not trust the driver of the vehicle. Since they’re not behind the wheel, they become nervous, exhibiting anxiety, offering suggestions and criticizing the driver.

One famous example of a relentless back seat driver is Hyacinth Bucket on the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, produced by the BBC. Hyacinth supervises her husband Richard’s every move, even reminding him to “mind the pedestrian” who is clearly distanced from their car on the sidewalk.

A comment written in The Bismarck Tribune in December 1921, read as follows: "A back-seat driver is the pest who sits on the rear cushions of a motor car and tells the driver what to do. He issues a lot of instructions, gives a lot of advice, offers no end of criticism and doesn't do a bit of work."

Actually, there seems to be a lot of other work they discover they can do, as exhibited by the epitome of backseat drivers. They hold onto the dashboard or grab the handle located on the car ceiling, just above the door. If a car suddenly cuts you off and pulls in front of your car, then hitting the brakes, the perfect action for the backseat driver to take is to yell, “Whoa!”. In inclement weather, the anxious passenger always reminds the driver of the slick and dangerous road conditions. Of course, your busy-body passenger must always begin to mess with the controls, such as the radio, heat and AC and since they’re not sure of how to operate them, they ask the driver how they work, distracting the driver’s focus. Let’s not forget how helpful it is when the backseat driver calls out that the light has turned green, as if you, the driver, aren’t waiting for the light change.

How many of us have driven with backseat drivers who repeatedly yell, “watch out!” and gasp with their little “oohs” and “ughs”? Many other drivers on the road are completely fed up with those who are distracted while driving and talking on their cell phones simultaneously, however, it’s a great way of shutting out the backseat driver sitting next to you.

Most of my life, I have witnessed my mother nagging my father about his driving. She refuses to drive if the controls are offered to her and she absolutely will not read a map. My new SUV drives, (no pun intended), her crazy, as she reminds me how these vehicles can flip over. Wow, even when you’re going ten miles per hour? Amazing!

I would never be able to force my mother out of the car, although she incessantly has to question which direction we’re going or what route we’re taking, every-single-time we’re traveling, but you don’t have to appease everyone. Pull over and request that they exit immediately!

You Can Keep Your Maiden Name

Recently, I came across an article covering an in-depth study on women suffering from identity crisis, stemming from taking their spouse’s name. The psychological effects on some women can evolve into a crisis, where they actually begin to feel that they don’t even know who they are anymore. The real crisis or potentiality of such is the fact that this remains a critical issue for many women and even for men in some cases
Women who have chosen to take their husband’s name can range from those who don’t really see it as an issue at all to those who fear that if they don’t, their children’s identity will be lost or confused. Those who have elected to keep their given names see several advantages. Some believe in the importance of carrying on the identity of their lineage; some simply love their name, have had it all their lives and wouldn’t change it for any reason; and some don’t want the hassle of the legal red tape, which can get even more complicated if a woman divorces and wants her maiden name back.
For the past several decades, this has been a huge problem for many divorced women. Taking back their maiden name left them non-existent, alienated in a world who used to know them as Mrs. Someone, leaving them as a ‘nobody’ with zero credit history. Whether your changing your name back to your own or taking his, still remains a challenge and an inconvenience.

Let’s make a list: A new driver’s license, passport, social security card, checking account, savings account, 401k plan, stocks, certificates, bonds or mutual funds, credit cards, subscriptions, membership cards, wills, mortgages, car loans, any legal documents and on and on.
Barbara in Texas says, “I didn't change my last name when I married, partly because my law license and diplomas bear my maiden name, but also because I didn't feel like changing or discarding the name given to me at birth.”

Tom from Oregon says, “Whenever my wife calls someplace regarding the kids (doctors, daycare, etc.), she has to say, ‘This is Jane Smith, John Doe's mother.’ Me, I can simply say, ‘This is Tom Doe, John's father.’ I've had problems picking up prescriptions for my wife when she can't because of our different names. My wife also carries a copy of our marriage license on her at all times.”
Angie in North Carolina writes, "The best solution I came across was a couple that picked a brand new last name for themselves. I have three sets of friends who did this!”
Christine from Ohio says, “I’m still stuck with my ex-husband’s last name. When we divorced, I feared that I would have to start all over again, from being able to buy a home to getting credit in my maiden name.”

Julia in Chicago writes, “I've seen lots of variations in my time as a professor, and my current Dean has a hyphenated name (but his wife does not!). I've talked about it with my partner and she, like me, shares the publishing dilemma concern.”
Which leads us to yet another name issue- to hyphenate or not to hyphenate. The moment we all heard that Hillary would officially be known as Hillary Rodham Clinton, it raised the validation level for many married women. I’m sure old Lucy Stone would have had plenty to say about that.
Lucy waged a passionate struggle for equal rights for women, a struggle that continues even in today‘s world. In existence since the early 1920’s, The Lucy Stone League is dedicated to equal rights for women and men to retain, modify and create their names, believing that a person's name is fundamental to her and/or his existence. I wonder what Lucy’s mother’s maiden name was? I suspect that Ms. Stone would have been a hyphenator.
However, over the past 10 years, fewer women have been keeping their maiden names. According to a study by Harvard economics professor Claudia Goldin, based on Massachusetts birth records, the number of college-educated women in their thirties who have kept their given name, dropped from 23 percent in 1990 to 17 percent in 2000. Those traveling the traditional route by taking his name, join the ranks of 90% of women getting married today in the United States.

So . . . single? If you said yes, wasn’t it great to wake up this morning without having to deal with all of that mumbo-jumbo? Isn’t it wonderful to know who you truly are?

No In-Laws!

Read Samantha’s story:
Sam grew up in the Catholic faith, following in her father’s footsteps, under the dominant rule of the Dominican nuns and priests. Along with her school mates, she attended Mass every Wednesday morning before school and occasional Sundays with her father.

The years of teachings from the catechism troubled Sam, but she was fearful of asking questions or debating issues that never seemed to make any sense. Yet, Sam was enchanted on the day of her First Communion and later stood tall as a soldier of Christ on her Confirmation Day.

Her mother was a Methodist. She reminded Sam frequently of how the priest forced her to sign a document stating that every child bore in her marriage to Sam’s father would exclusively be raised as a Catholic. Sam witnessed the cultural differences within her own family and learned quickly how polarizing each religious belief could be. Her grandparents on either side of the family never gelled and Sam learned at an early age of the dreadful, so-called, “mother-in-law”.

Sam continually experienced the prejudiced attitude of the nuns and how they acted out their feelings on the children of mixed marriages. She became increasingly uncomfortable in class, when the nuns, who were also the elementary teachers, would ask the students the same question repeatedly throughout grade school: How many girls in the class are planning to become a nun when they grow up? How many young men are planning to become a priest when they grow up? In the clusters of raised hands, Samantha never participated with a reply.

As a young adult, Sam was uncertain of what she truly believed in. She began to search her soul about God and Jesus. After several years of personal study of Buddahism, Christianity and Judaism, she discovered that the Jewish faith came closer to her true beliefs and finally found comfort in her relationship with God.

Samantha later met a young man who was Jewish. His family were members of a conservative temple, but only attended services on High Holidays. She fell in love with him, but he struggled with the fear of having to break it to his parents that he had met a non-Jew and hoped to marry Sam. His mother was more compassionate and understanding, but as his father shook Samantha’s hand for the first time, he looked her straight in the eyes and firmly stated, “I don’t like convertibles”.

That day, Samantha’s heartaches began. She forged on, converting into the Jewish faith, married who she believed was the man of her dreams, but never won the hearts of her in-laws. They patiently waited along the sidelines for the marriage to fail, which did after five alienating years.

Samantha never remarried. Her disappointments in the her ex-husband’s character, clearly a mirrored image of his parents, crushed her desires to practice a Jewish lifestyle. He later began dating a Jewish girl and eventually married her, satisfying the will of his father and finally giving his mother peace of mind and peace in the family.

That’s only one woman’s fate, where religion had more power over the actual relationship they could have had with their daughter-in-law. Fortunately for many people, they have found love and lasting relationships in mixed marriages. Their successes are forged from parents who are more culturally objective and comfortable with who they are themselves. Parents who indulge in impressing their friends and colleagues, force their children to exist behind an imaginary wall of prejudice.

Their Stuff, Your Stuff

I met my second husband at a local radio station where we both worked. We were on the air at the same time. He was AM. I was FM. Our love affair bloomed, exchanging glances through the studio windows.

To say that I was shocked when I first visited his apartment is quite an understatement. With that said, I’ll spare you the details. I had never been inside someone’s bachelor pad before and suddenly began to appreciate that my first husband never lived like a cave man. At this point, I had been divorced for a few years and in the process of building my second house. Was I ready to share my dream home with Java Man?

The day he moved in, I learned a lot about myself. As each box and “man thing” was carried into what would no longer be just my space, I cringed. Was I already set in my ways, too eccentric, too feminine with my décor? Would I have the interior design skills to blend my Country French furnishings with his 1960’s rattan patio group that still possessed the musty odor of his parent’s basement?

Mr. Friedman, now my ex-husband, has been a Beatles fan and collector of Beatle’s albums and memorabilia. However, his life-sized poster of the band from the “Introducing the Beatles” photo sessions, became a challenge for me. Me, who also loved the fab four since childhood, inspiring my songwriting skills and musical tastes. At eleven years of age, I actually believed that I would marry Paul McCartney as soon as he dumped Jane Asher, but Linda Eastman beat me, along with millions of other women to the punch!

At twenty-eight, there I was, married to Mr. Friedman instead and there stood Paul staring back at me from my living room wall. How would I break it to my husband that his beloved Beatle’s poster, under glass in it’s sturdy brass frame, was more apropos for a college dorm? Paul, George, John and Ringo eventually found a home downstairs in the recreation room with the rattan furniture.

I do feel fortunate that my ex was a Beatle’s fan and not a beer can collector. Even Dodi Fayed had a huge wall covered with his ball cap collection. Hmmmmm, I wonder what Diana thought of his Paris bachelor pad?

Years after my husband and I parted, he emailed to let me know that accidentally, the poster fell and the glass shattered. I sometimes wonder if the poster would be cool hanging in my music studio today. It’s surprising to find how much I have changed.

It can be a wild and wooly battle for territory and personal space with a spouse or live-in partner. If you’re still on the fence about staying single, take your time and be observant. When he moves in and wants to display his little plastic soldiers from his childhood on the window sill, run as fast as you can!

How would you like to find new friends who are into enlightenment and spiritual well being? Step into the light and sign up for a yoga or tai chi class. Aaah! Just the sound of the word, 'yoga', doesn't it make you relaxed?

If you’re bored and fed up with your current job, go hunting for a new one. A new environment holds magical possibilities. Go shopping, even if you have no money, browse and window shop.
You may find a new friend in a pet store or the local humane society.

Which reminds me . . . lots of dog lovers will tell you to just get a dog, go to the park or the beach and watch what happens! (Instant friends and so much fun! ) Your cat wouldn’t be very happy at the beach anyway.

The golden ticket is asserting yourself. It’s easier than you think to bag that shy side of your personality and start opening up to people. Talk to strangers who are friendly in appearance. It makes waiting in line go so much faster.

Last but not least, smile at someone when you pass them on the street and by all means, smile back at someone who has smiled at you- what a gift!

You Are at the Controls

It’s your choice, your responsibility and all about your needs. Some people only need to prevent pregnancy, where others need to protect themselves or their partners from sexually transmitted diseases.

Your choice of birth control should depend on several factors. These include your health, frequency of sexual activity, number of sexual partners and desire to have children. Your health care provider can help you select the best form of birth control for you, but it all comes down to you to ensure your own sexual well being.

In today’s world, thank goodness for the Internet. It’s all there, even BirthControl.com. We’ve come a long, long way in just the past 20 years. With a variety of oral contraceptives, condoms, IUD’s, spermicides, implants, patches, rings, caps, diaphragms, douches, vasectomy, even the rhythm method, it can make you dizzy just thinking about.

Your family doctor can inform you about the pros and cons of each birth control option, but he doesn’t have the time to consult you on those specifics. It’s your responsibility to do the research. Few doctors will take the time to provide printed materials on in-depth research and potential side effects. There are many serious factors to consider: your heart, decrease in bone density, depression, nausea, weight gain and the list goes on.

So, if it’s important to you and your own peace of mind, you have the wheel. Is saying, “no” an option? Duh!

My husband and I were married for 7 years. In the beginning, it seemed as though he loved everything about me, but after a year, things began to change. Maybe I took it for granted at first that he must have been happy with me, since he always seemed to be happy.

During the pregnancy of our first child, he began to criticize my appearance. No matter how I dressed or how I wore my hair, he wasn’t satisfied. I knew that he was embarrassed to be seen in public with me as my size increased more and more. After our daughter was born, I joined an aerobics class, watched my diet and returned to my weight that I maintained before we were married. However, he continued to be critical of what I wore and how I looked.

He didn’t stop there with my appearance and started to complain about the clothes I would buy for our little girl. In the evenings, he complained about my cooking, saying that he just put up with it over the years and finally had to say something. After our second child was born, I did my best to keep the toys and play areas organized, but for my husband, the house was never clean enough.

After five years with this man, I fell out of love with him. I began to hate myself and blame myself for everything. I don't know how I ever stuck it out for two more years. Finally, one morning after I took my daughter to school, I packed up the baby and went to the library. I found a huge section of self-help books and started to research what was wrong with me. The library became an obsession, as I couldn’t get enough information. The more I studied, I came to learn that the problem wasn’t me.

Each day I felt stronger and more confident to face my husband when he would badger and intimidate me. I finally mustered up to the courage to leave him, found legal counsel, filed for divorce and got custody of my children.

One day, I would like to re-marry, but I’m enjoying my freedom too much. There’s actually more time that I can devote to my children and so much more time for myself.
I love who I see in the mirror!

You Say, "To-may-to" and I Say, "To-mah-to"

Once again, here we go over the river and through the woods. Some of us will enjoy a lovely, festive meal with dear ones and others will be wishing they would have figured out an excuse to get out of going where they ended up for the holiday.

This blog could easily fall into the “no-in laws” category from my book, "Single 101: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single", but let's focus on the food! Fortunately for us who are single and living alone, what gets stuffed into the refrigerator, stays in the refrigerator, (even the left-over turkey is all pour moi). But wait, ah, ah, ah- get your mits off of that turkey leg and read Maggie’s story first:

I was born and raised in the Midwestern United States, where it was tradition to stuff and roast a turkey. We had all the trimmings with potatoes, gravy, an assortment of cooked vegetables, cranberry relish, cornbread and pumpkin pie. My husband and I were married for 18 years, but he was never satisfied with Thanksgiving served at our house, where I did all the cooking. He grew up in Maine, where the holidays were centered on the family seafood business. Thanksgiving and Christmas to his family meant clam chowder or lobster bisque, fresh scallops, shrimp, anything seafood. Potatoes were acceptable, but cranberry relish came out of the can.
Not a seafood lover myself, I dreaded those long trips to the east coast every other year. Trying to be polite, I would sip my chowder, but get full on mashed potatoes. What I was most thankful for on those Thanksgiving Days was simply the pumpkin pie!

Maggie isn’t alone. When you’re from the other side of the continent, it’s easy to see how so many of us clash when it comes to taste, especially on this day of feasting. The total win-win being single, is that you can travel anywhere you want for Thanksgiving, eat what you want, select what you want at the market or stay home and curl up with a great book.

Here’s hoping that this Thanksgiving finds you with who you love being with or doing what you love. Since we only live once, go ahead and add a dollop of whipped cream on that pie. Enjoy!

According to Money Mag, Ohio is the best in the Midwest for small communities with populations between 7,500 and 50,000. Towns like Beavercreek, Gahanna and Highland Heights had the highest education scores, lowest crime rate and home affordability, in addition to high rankings in racial diversity, health care access, arts and leisure.

Northbrook, Ohio boasts the most affordable homes with the median home price of $83,760. A suburb of Cincinnati, Northbrook residents say they like the low-key living. Those who call home to Tonawanda, New York will tell you that it’s their town that offers the best in affordable homes, located along the beautiful Niagara River. If you’re searching for a family friendly environment with economic opportunities, Money suggests you check out Middleton, Wisconsin. For a more affluent atmosphere, the town with highest average income for 2007 is Hillsborough, California with a population of only 10, 500 and a median income of $263,456.

In 1989, Seattle was voted as the Number One best city to live in America, where a three-bedroom tudor-style home sold for $130,000. Even though Boeing has since relocated to Chicago, Starbucks and Microsoft call Seattle home where the Puget Sound and Cascade Mountains make you forget about how much it rains.

College towns offer the largest populations of singles, such as State College, Pennsylvania and Durham, New Hampshire where and 75% are single. Steeped in history, architecture and romantic landscapes, these serene, cozy communities thrive with plenty of entertainment and nightlife. The shortest commute to work can be found in Pella, Iowa and Pierre, South Dakota with an average of 7.5 minutes. Looking for the cleanest air? Start apartment or home hunting in Troy, Alabama or Brattleboro, Vermont.

Traveler’s Digest writes that Los Angeles is truly where western culture is defined today. Most trends begin in L.A. and influence the world. The most freedom in the world can be found in Amsterdam, Holland. Although drugs and hookers can legally be found on the same street, Amsterdam has one of the strongest economies in Europe and the friendliest people.

The Number One city in the world to live in, according to Traveler’s Digest is Montreal, Canada. One of the most diverse cultural cities with a growing economy. Just plan on gearing up with plenty of fleece, corduroys, winter coats and oh, oui, better learn to speak Francais!

If you love the cold and prefer a cozy fire seventy-five percent of the year, College, Alaska ranks as the coldest with an average temperature of 14 below zero in January. Grand Forks, Fargo and Jamestown, all in North Dakota average 4 below zero during the winter months and I can personally attest that with the wind factoring in, the temp drops to 50 below. For those who love the heat and low humidity, pack up for Rancho Mirage, California or Las Vegas, who average 108 degrees in July and a yearly humidity average of 28%.

So, now that you’re on your own, how do you like it? A quick commute or life in the big city? Speaking French? Hot or cold? Hey! Have some fun- close your eyes and point your finger to somewhere on the map. Then, open your eyes and discover your destiny.

I suppose you can blame it all on Joseph Pulitzer, who published the very first crossword puzzle in his publication, The New York World, on December 21, 1913. Arthur Wynne, who created the puzzle in the shape of a diamond with just a few clues, started a phenomenon that many newspaper subscribers cannot live without. Many newspaper publishers will tell you that you can forget to post an important news item with no reaction, but if you fail to publish the daily crossword puzzle, readers will have a snit.

According to Will Shortz, editor of the New York Times crossword puzzle, perhaps as many as 50 million people do crosswords just in America. One reader claims that he never gets bored as long as he has his daily puzzle, where another woman says that it keeps her mind sharp, improving her vocabulary.

A homemaker in Virginia states that she cringed when her husband bought her a crossword puzzle dictionary for Christmas, thinking it would help her. "That would be cheating," she said. Isn’t it lovely to be single? The Free Spirit

Like dependence on the next breath, the soul demands its independence.

When I think of all of the things that make life easier as a single person, the list is long. It certainly doesn’t stretch from here to the moon and back, but all I ask for is to eat what I want and when; wear what I want to wherever; sleep whenever I want- wherever; and be the sole owner of the keys.

For many of us, it makes life so much easier in a stressful world. Maybe some of us just haven’t found that one companion to live with like two peas in a pod, however, I prefer to be human and not a pea.

I can count on one hand the people I trust behind the wheel, otherwise I’m a backseat driver in the passenger seat. The older I get, the further I grow away from that child who felt safe and fell asleep on the back seat when my father was at the wheel. So, is it all about comfortability or simply a matter of trust?

As a creative spirit, I’ve discovered that it’s nearly impossible to share space with others within the same household. The need for focus and serenity is too great. Many people with creative talents, whose careers are guided by their muse have difficulty finding peace and compatibility.

Do we feel the need to live like there is no tomorrow, knowing that eventually there won’t be one? Not exactly. Most of us just prefer the right to come and go as we please.

Aaaaah, the Single Flatulence of It All!

How many times have you smiled when you opened up a can of beans because you knew that you wouldn’t embarrass yourself later. Who cares? Make all the noise you want and enjoy the benefits as well.

Let’s ponder the “power” of beans, as it's really something to make noise about. Kidney, black, navy, pinto, garbanzo, soybeans and lentils are low in fat, calories and sodium. High in fiber and the good carbs, they contain the Omega-6 fatty acids. Soybeans contain the Omega-3’s. Studies have shown that if you add either canned or dry beans to your diet, you can reduce blood cholesterol levels by 10 percent within just two to three weeks.

Kidney beans alone are a good source of folate, potassium, iron, manganese, copper and zinc, known to aid in lowering blood pressure. In a study of almost 10,000 men and women, those who ate beans four or more times a week, cut their risk of coronary heart disease by nearly 20 percent, compared with those who ate beans less than once per week.

Rich in soluble fiber, which helps to eliminate cholesterol from the body, kidney beans prevent blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal. The soluble fiber in beans takes up a lot of volume in the stomach which leads to a feeling of fullness, according to Dr. Ralph Felder, author of “The Bonus Years Diet”.

Beans and lentils have the same potent anti-inflammatory antioxidants, also found in teas, fruits, grapes, red wine and cocoa beans. It’s interesting to note that the reddish flavonal pigments in bean and lentil seed coats exert antioxidant activity 50 times greater than vitamin E. They can protect against oxidative damage to cell membrane lipids; promote healthy collagen and cartilage; and restore the antioxidant powers of vitamins C and E after they’ve won their war over the free radicals.

So, man the guns matey, release those toxins and reap the benefits. Yes, you still have to live with yourself and the smell, but aaaaah, the single flatulence of it all!

Go Ahead, Lick the Spoon!

Living single has its advantages when it comes to issues such as personal space, boundaries, hygiene and well, let’s just stop there.

Unless you embarrass yourself and feel totally like a slob, drinking directly from the milk jug or juice bottle in the fridge seems so much more convenient than taking the time to get a glass from the cupboard. If you must, go for it!

However, certain food items start to look unappetizing with similar liberties. For example, if you take a bite out of a tomato and put it back in the veggie keeper, it’s going to get ugly. It may be wise to store less “chewed on” food.

One of the greatest rewards for me is knowing that the cookies will still be there when I get back or if there’s two ice cream sandwiches left in the freezer, there will still be the same two the next time I want one. The love affair between a cook and his/her precious time in the kitchen has a completely different set of rules if you are cooking for one. What gourmet cook doesn’t experiment and check the flavor of sauces and broths in meal preparation? There’s no need to keep using a clean spoon and another one and another one.

The ultimate experience for all are the pleasures gained from baking cakes. Who cares if it’s a white cake, yellow, spice or German chocolate. After the batter is poured into the cake pans, the real fun begins. Just please be sure to disconnect the power to the mixer before licking!

My grandfather told me once that he drank a cup of hot water with a mixture of vinegar and honey stirred in every day. He claimed that it gave him energy and stamina.

Gregory Nestor, one of the world’s oldest humans, credits his longevity to barefoot walks, sour milk and never being married. Bi Deben from Beijing says he must eat meat every day. Deben, who is now 103 says he feels uneasy without his daily intake of meat.

Centenarians share many similarities with healthy habits, including exercise, strength training, diet and stress reduction. Many believe that being socially active is key to a long life and studies have shown that they experience less depression, stronger immune systems and lower incidence of heart disease.

Mahbuba Fatullayeya of Peshtatuk, Azerbaijan, who is also 103 years old, was born into the Russian empire ruled by a czar. She remembers the Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin's path to power. “I have always been with nature”, she says, “I knew the value of life. "Sometimes I eat milk, yogurt, honey, anything that comes my way." An 80-year-old neighbor of Mahbuba, who looks much younger, claims that everything she eats, she gets from nature. The cow drinks clear water and eats nourishing grass and she drink the good milk.

Sevinj Huseinova, a biologist who works in the Laboratory of Long Life at the Institute of Physiology in Baku, says an extraordinary number of people do live long lives there - long being about 110 - because of genetic factors enhanced by diet, exercise and fresh air. “. Huseinova counsels that we should forget about the news. "The less information a person has," she says, "the longer he lives. There's less stress."

“Eat yogurt along with garlic and mint“, says Chingiz Gasimov, the laboratory director. “Eat cilantro and chives, saffron and tarragon, and sumakh, a red spice made from dried berries“, he says, “and such a diet will prevent cholesterol”.

In his book, “Secrets of Longevity- Hundreds of Ways to Live to Be 100”, Dr. Maoshing Ni,
who specializes in Tai Chi and longevity offers such tips as eating more blueberries, telling the truth and saying ‘no’ to undue burdens. He believes there are hundreds of proven ways to make everyone’s stay on earth much happier.

And finally, there’s this article published in Science Daily, February 2005, about the deep-sea tube worm, Lamellibrachia luymesi, who is among the longest-lived of all animals, with an incredible lifespan of up to 250 years. How it obtains sufficient nutrients in the form of sulfide to keep going for this long has been a mystery. In a paper published in the online journal PLoS Biology, a team of biologists now provide a solution: By releasing its waste sulfate not up into the ocean but down into the sediments, L. luymesi stimulates the growth of sulfide-producing microbes, thus ensuring its own long-term survival.

So, whether you’re a worm or a human, the key seems to be staying close to nature and maintaining strong relationships, even for the happy hearts in the deep blue sea.

Will He or Won't He Call?

If you haven’t switched over to hi-speed internet access, living in the world of dial-up is tough enough, but are you wasting your time waiting by the phone?
We’ve all been there, wondering if he’s going to call and when. It’s just another reason to celebrate being single. The limbo waiting room doesn’t exist anymore. Here’s Michaela’s story . . .
It was a gloomy, rainy day, of course. I had just interviewed for a great job with a fashion manufacturer, who said they would contact me by the end of the week. I wanted this job and needed more money, plus the wardrobe comps were very generous. The interview was on Tuesday, but let me tell you about Wednesday.

I had been dating Tim for almost a year. He was notorious for never calling, so I always found myself being the more assertive partner in the relationship. Tim seemed happy for me that I’d finally landed the interview and I moped around the house all of Wednesday, wishing that he’d at least call and ask how it went.

I mean, what does he do all the time? Is he sitting around hoping I’ll call or maybe just thinking that I’ll call eventually, so he won’t worry about it? Watching out the window at the pouring rain, I made a promise to myself that I would not call him. Let’s just see if he really cares about me, I thought.

After finishing off half a bag of potato chips, I stood in front of the refrigerator, planning on the feast I would have with what was left of the chocolate chip ice cream. Instead, I broke my promise to myself and grabbed the phone. I called Tim and got his voicemail, but didn’t leave a message. An hour later, I called his cell phone and left a short message, just saying that it was me calling. I became so angry that he never offered me any emotional support, I decided not to dare call him again and not to answer the phone if it rang.

Around 3:30, that afternoon, the phone rang, but I let the voicemail capture the call. I became so furious with not only Tim, but myself for being so weak, I didn’t check the message. I assumed that I wouldn’t hear from the employer until Friday, certain that if the phone actually rang, it would be Tim or my mother.

I finally checked the messages later on Thursday to learn I’d missed my opportunity for the new position. My obsession over Tim cost me the chance for my new job, as it was the employer who had called. The message stated that they had experienced such an unbelievable response to the job opening, they would need to hear back from me right away, by 5pm that day, otherwise the job would go to the second most valuable candidate.

So, that was Thursday and by Friday, Tim had never called.

How do we know when it’s time to move on and realize our unfulfilled desires?
Can we be certain when the time is right and if we’re clearly interpreting our inner voice? When we allow doubt and fear to take control, our strongest desires, hopes and dreams are dashed.
Choosing to live the single life, opens up far more opportunities to be spontaneous or make changes without drastically affecting our spouse or live-in partner. So much of one person’s life can be lost and never replaced due to the needs and decisions of a dominant spouse.

Reaching Your Full Potential

One of the 101 reasons to celebrate being single in “Single 101” is the freedom to pursue your passion. When I think of the advice I’ve received from family, friends, teachers, mentors, sages in books and even little calendars with inspiring affirmations, it’s wonderful to have genuine support.
A friend once said that those positive voices began to do battle with the negative voices in her head, only the negative voices were really coming from the outside, from her spouse.
Finding positive support in a relationship can be like mining for gold and one day, you wake up and realize that the person sleeping next to you is either jealous of your success or has no interest whatsoever in your life’s desires.
I can gratefully relish in the fact that my first husband and I fully support each other now. After thirty-five years, we accept the other for who they are and it seems as though our shortcomings are non-existent. We hold on to the good memories and focus on reaching our full potential as individuals. Romance doesn’t have to be a part of enjoying the person you fell in love with. Every now and then, I get to hang out with the guy who was my best friend and still, in so many ways, continues to be that man today.
Reaching the summit of your full potential is still a tough climb, but far less complicated when a spouse or partner isn’t trying to drag you back down the mountain.

If only we could have read books in the 1980’s from authors like Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, who teamed up to pen the Simon Spotlight Entertainment book, “He’s Just Not That Into You”. As Greg and Liz simply put it, “stop kidding yourself!”
Statistics show that more women today are choosing to fly solo after divorce and failed relationships. In this changing world, more publishers are offering us opportunities to learn from the voices of wisdom and experience. Hopefully, if we feed our brains, we’ll heal our hearts.

When you’re single, you can keep going till breakfast and sleep as late as you please with no more worries or thoughts of how he’ll feel about it. Music For Our Troops

As we are fast approaching the Fourth of July, there’s something that we can all get involved in by supporting our troops.
It’s a songwriter’s life for me and it finds me always looking for ways to share my music.
I recently discovered a wonderful web site, where songwriters and composers could submit their music to be a part of a compilation CD to be sent to our troops.
I’m proud to say that one of my songs, “Wild Horses” has been chosen to be on the “All States All Stars” collection. It represents songwriters from each of the 50 states and is planned for shipment to our troops by the Fourth of July, 2007.
